PRISM Cruise - Oceanography Field Course
PRISM courses and course components are developed in line with recent recommendations for educational reform by the National Research Council and the National Science Foundation. All students are expected to be competent in science in order to become informed citizens. PRISM's educational program, therefore, focuses on developing and supporting courses in the environmental sciences (e.g. Oceanography, Fisheries, Atmospheric Sciences, Marine Affairs) and issues courses for non-specialists with interests in the environment (e.g. Business, Education, Law, Urban Planning).
Methods include: active learning by inquiry, class and laboratory presentations, and collaborative student activities. The program relies, to a significant extent, on educational technologies for presentations, running simulations and problem-solving exercises. The education program also provides opportunities for students to take part in the development of PRISM's databases and models. Initial conversations with the staff of the UWired Center for Teaching, Learning and Technology about how they might work with us have been most encouraging.
