Virtual Scaleable Basin (VSB)

A computer software framework for Earth science simulation

The Virtual Scalable Basin (VSB) is a computer software framework that lets earth science simulations proceed in a consistent manner, regardless of scope. The system configures itself based on the size and complexity of the data inputs to make the best use of computing resources and hides those details from the user. With the VSB framework, simulation scientists can prepare model inputs using consistent tools such as numeric manipulation programs and geographic information system software.

PRISM's financial support, as well as intellectual leadership of the design process, represents a major component of the VSB development. Begun as funding for a graduate student project and continuing in the form of staff support, PRISM has watched VSB grow and become the foundation of the River Research Group led at the University of Washington.
